Faqs

So what's Thumb?

Thumb is an SMS/MMS marketing service. We specialise in the charity sector, but could equally apply our insight to the commercial sector.

What can Thumb do again? Does Thumb fit?

Our aim is to integrate Thumb into existing and new communications programmes – linking old style media and the web to achieve maximum impact.

Who're the brains behind the Thumb?

Thumb was created by Bluefrog and Frank's Ice Store.

Who is Frank's Ice Store?

Franks Ice Store used to be Bluefrog's new media team. We're now out there on our own – working with cutting edge technology to bring people closer to charities.

What's it got to do with Bluefrog?

Bluefrog is Frank's Ice Store's parent company. We share a home – and an approach. Bluefrog specialises in the charity sector and works with great clients like The National Trust, ChildLine, Oxfam, Friends of the Earth, Shelter, Sense, SPANA, Mind and many, many more.

Data protection

On the 11 December 2003, new privacy rules were implemented. The Privacy Directive updates previous rules to account for the widespread use of new technologies such as email, the internet and SMS. More technical details follow, but the important thing to remember is that the people you contact should 'opt-in' to receiving SMS. And of course, we'll be able to give you advice on how to use Thumb in the best way.

What do the new rules mean?

Unsolicited emails and SMS can only be sent to people who have consented to having their details used in this way.

Existing customers/supporters

You can continue to email or SMS existing supporters as long as the following criteria are met.

VAT issues

At the moment, income from text messages attracts VAT. We think that charitable donations made in this way should be exempt from VAT – just as they are for other methods of giving. So we’ve been speaking to HM Customs and Excise and expect a ruling in the near future.
